Urban Soul - Indulge in Authentic Southern Flavors in Detroit

My family and I went to Urban Soul after church, and I must say, it lived up to the hype! The food was fantastic, especially the collard greens. I’ll definitely be going back.

Went for an early dinner. Service was very good. Food was hit or miss. My salmon was overcooked but my green beans and potato salad was excellent. My companion's catfish was very good but the fried chicken was just ok.

Group Lunch and the food was surprisingly delicious and service was good . Something about the seating and the Lights were taking the atmosphere of a cafeteria or a Restaurant borderline of each.

I traveled up from Toledo to get some Soul food and I’ll TELL YOU WHAT! They did not disappoint. The collard greens were excellent, the Mac and cheese was CHEF’S KISS and the short rib is so tender, juicy and flavorful when I tell you it’s tendernism, it’s TENDERNISM. My food came out a little room temperature but the flavor and tendernism made up the difference for me. My fiancée got the meatloaf and the flavor is impeccable and the sweet potato is to die for just the right sweetness to cover your taste buds. The service was very good and our waitress was nice. The music makes you feel right at home. One critique I would add is just to update the place a little bit. Whether it’s the carpet, the tables and chairs, the color or con newer ambience. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and the food was super delicious! 9.5/10 from me!

The mac and cheese was really good! The short rib was so tender but had a lot of fat. Worked great for carry out dinner.

We visited Urban Soul for a special family dinner to celebrate two birthdays, and as someone visiting from out of town, I was excited to try a local favorite. The overall experience was warm and welcoming—especially appreciated as we came in from the Michigan cold. We were seated quickly, and the atmosphere had a cozy, down-to-earth vibe that made us feel right at home. The food itself was delicious and full of flavor—truly soulful cooking. We rated it 4 out of 5 stars and would’ve happily given a full 5 if not for one unfortunate surprise: a Wendy’s condiment wrapper that turned up in the collard greens. While we understand things happen in a busy kitchen, we were disappointed that no one from management came out to apologize or even acknowledge it. Our server mentioned she spoke with the back-of-house team, but no one followed up with our group directly. A simple apology would’ve gone a long way. That said, our waitress was fantastic—balancing multiple tables with grace and still managing to keep everything running smoothly. Our meals came out promptly, and we had every condiment imaginable at our fingertips (and, clearly, beyond!). Despite the unexpected “extra ingredient,” we chose to laugh through it and enjoy the night. At the end of the day, we were just grateful to be together and celebrate more years of life. Urban Soul has a lot going for it, and I’d definitely give it another shot—with hopes for both great food and a little extra care from the team next time.

I have been coming here for over 6yrs & I Absolutely LOVE coming here to Eat!!!. I Have never been Disappointed!!! Everything is always FRESHLY DROPPED (Chicken & Fish) unlike these other Places that put it under a Heated Lamp. I do Advise you get their EARLIER in the Day because they do SELL OUT of their Sides & the Dining stops Seating any Customers by 6:30pm (Closes at 7) however you can Order Take Out. Definitely a Hidden Gem

I was in town for work and wanted to have soul food for dinner. Found this gem via Google and they did not disappoint. I had the catfish dinner with yams, greens and dressing. Everything was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of seasoning and the peach cobbler was incredible. If I had to have one complaint, it's that they don't offer cabbage but that's a reach because there was nothing to complain about with this meal. I'll certainly be back when I'm back in Detroit in May.
